Great premise and music but unfortunately this movie misses the mark.
Lily James is a star and is fantastic while Himesh Patel is charming throughout. The Beatles songs carry us through while we root for James and Patel's characters to get together but its not enough to watch a second time. Great for the family but not a hit enough to recommend to friends. Danny Boyle has won every award by now in his previous movies, but his directing in this one keeps us from the deeper depth needed to make it more heartfelt. Still I noticed tears from my sister as Patel's character hits his crossroads and is forced to make his decisions of consequence and there are fantastic moments in the film as others seem to catch on to Patel’s character’s lies. This is a feel good movie which seems like a fairy tale from a parallel universe. An added bonus is that one may view this film as a sing-a-long musical with great songs such as “The Long and Winding Road”, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”, “Carry That Weight”, “Help!”, “I Saw Her Standing There”, “She loves You”, “Across the Universe”, “In my Life”, “A Day in The Life”, “Yesterday’” and many more.
In fact, if you consider yourself a Beatles fan, please add one and a half stars to the three that are rated. In other words, Beatles fans- upgrade your rating for Yesterday as if it is 4 1/2 stars.
